Injury in international competitions has long been Mark Cuban's biggest reservation when it comes to his players. While the Mavericks have been lucky on that front through the years, especially with Dirk Nowitzki, this summer wasn't as kind.
Roddy Beaubois broke his left foot preparing for the FIBA World Championship with France. The second-year point guard had surgery in early August to insert a pin into his foot. Recovery is supposed to take 2-3 months.
The setback to Beaubois was more than just the injury. The Mavs are grooming him to be the heir apparent to Jason Kidd, and this summer Beaubois was supposed to be France's starter at point guard.
Beaubois was most effective playing alongside Kidd last season at shooting guard.
Guard Tyreke Evans was suspended by the NBA for the season opener at Minnesota on Oct. 27 for his arrest and charge of excessive speeding on Interstate 80 in Sacramento.
The Rookie of the Year was clocked going 130 mph before being pulled over and arrested without incident for the May 31 nine-mile romp. He pleaded no contest. His driver's license was suspended and he was sentenced to 80 hours of community service, in addition to speaking at the CHP's Start Smart safe-driving class for teenagers.
Evans isn't the first Kings player to draw the ire of NBA commissioner David Stern. In the last 10 years, he has handed down suspensions to Chris Webber, Jason Williams, Brad Miller and Maurice Taylor for violating the NBA's anti-drug policy.
